Ask you to pay into a personal bank account, or change our bank details by email or message.
Ask for your online banking passwords, one-time codes or your login details for a tax authority portal, such as IRS, HMRC, EmaraTax or IRIS accounts.
Pressure you to pay immediately to avoid arrest, deportation, licence cancellation or legal action.

Scams that impersonate tax authorities
Scam messages, calls and letters often impersonate tax authorities, including the IRS, HMRC, the UAE Federal Tax Authority (FTA) and the FBR. They usually promise a refund, threaten a penalty or arrest, or ask you to “verify” details through a link. Don’t click links or call numbers given in the message itself.
United States: the IRS generally makes first contact by post. It does not start contact by email, text or social media to ask for personal or financial information, and it does not demand payment by gift card or wire transfer. Suspicious IRS emails can be forwarded to phishing@irs.gov.
United Kingdom: HMRC warns that scam texts, emails and calls often promise a tax refund or threaten arrest. Suspicious texts can be forwarded to 60599 and emails to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk.
United Arab Emirates: messages claiming to come from the FTA may say a refund is waiting, a fine is due or a tax registration will be cancelled. Check the position by signing in to your account on the official EmaraTax portal directly, typing the address yourself rather than following a link, and send the message to us if you’re unsure.
Pakistan: fake FBR messages and notices circulate, often asking for payment or personal details through links. Check any notice against your account on the FBR’s IRIS portal or through the FBR’s official website before responding, and send it to us if you’re unsure.
